Registration for the 2018 Seminar is NOW OPEN! Click here to register online for the meeting. If you would prefer to fill out a paper application, you can download the appropriate form below and mail it in to our office. The registration deadline is January 12th, 2018. All registrations will be confirmed by email. You must be a current SMA member to attend. You can now begin to book room reservations for our Annual Seminar event! The single / double rate is $270 per night. The resort fee is waived for our group, so you won’t pay for internet access or self parking at the hotel. In addition, they offer discounted tickets to many local attractions like Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo.

These rates will sell out before January, so please don’t wait to secure your room. To participate in all of the Seminar events, you should be there by Sunday, February 4 at 3pm, and stay until Thursday at 2pm. You’ve got a weekend on either side, so take advantage! Limited rooms are available for the extra weekend nights. You will not regret having a little more time to enjoy the beach.

"This rambling white clapboard legend, with red-peaked roof, crimson turrets, and lazy verandas, is said to be “one-third sun, one-third sand, one-third fairy tale”. Radiating gracious Victorian splendor, this classic beachfront resort was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1977."

We can’t promise you’ll see the resident ghost, but we can guarantee that you’ll experience another one of it’s most famous permanent residents, Otis #61. One of the first fully functioning electric elevators manufactured in America, Otis #61 has graced the main lobby of the Hotel del Coronado since the resort opened in 1888. You’ll see many other photos and landmark plaques throughout the hotel describing it’s amazing history.

All SMA meetings and events, with the exception of the Tuesday afternoon Petco tour and dinner on the USS Midway, will be held at this property. Seminar events include sponsored transportation from host hotel. A detailed agenda will be posted soon on this page.

 

Registration Cost Estimate & Travel Tips 

Estimate for manager or faculty member (4-night stay) - $2305 plus personals.
Estimate for corporate member $3030 plus personals.

Registration:

  • Manager Members - $525 ($475 for second attendee/same facility)
  • Non-Members - $825
  • Corporate Members - $1250

Airfare: $400

Book prior to 30 days in advance for a better price. The hotel is located just across the bay from downtown San Diego, and only a 15-minute drive from the San Diego International Airport (SAN).

Many flight options are available for late afternoon/early evening departure from these airports. Plan to take a 3pm or later flight out if you want to leave after the final program on Thursday.

Airport Transportation: ~$80

Uber and Lyft operate from the airport. Taxis are plentiful, 

and less costly than one night of valet parking. Valet parking at the hotel is $40 per night. Self parking is free. Remember that all Seminar events include sponsored transportation.

Hotel: ~$1200

Our group rate at the Hotel del Coronado for a regular king or double room is $270 plus taxes resort fee of $10 (with taxes total $300). This estimate is for 4 nights (check in Sunday and out Thursday) including taxes.

Meals: ~$100

Your registration fee covers Sunday dinner, Monday reception, Tuesday breakfast, dinner, snacks and box lunch for breakout attendees. Wednesday breakfast, and Thursday brunch are provided. Your registration includes admission and tours on the USS Midway.

Other:

  • Guest $400, manager primary guest $100
  • Foundation Golf tournament $200 for sponsors, no cost for managers
  • Optional Scholarship Foundation donations
  • Scholarship donation and SMA pullover $40

 

Foundation Fundraiser

Support the Scholarship Foundation by purchasing a SMA logo shirt! Order your shirt now, and you can pick it up at registration. $15 from each shirt purchase goes to the Foundation. You will also find an option on your registration form to donate directly. The Foundation gives scholarships to students in sports business programs, and supports the Seminar internship program. Plan to meet at least one of those deserving students at the Seminar.

 

Call for Papers

We cordially invite all academicians to submit sport business research proposals for consideration as either an oral (20 minute) or poster presentation, to the Stadium Managers Association Seminar. A focus on Stadium Management is encouraged and can encompass a number of facets relating to stadium management, sponsorship, marketing, outsourcing, social media, operations, etc.

Historically, attendees for this conference have included representation from the MLB, MiLB, NFL, CFL, MLS, and NCAA to name a few. This conference offers the opportunity to network and collaborate with individuals who hold leadership and operation positions in the sport industry.

Submission for a 20 minute oral presentation or a poster presentation will be accepted by submitting a 250-300 word abstract, including a title page containing the list of authors, their affiliations, and the lead author contact information. The submissions for consideration should be sent to the SMA office, sma@assoc-mgmt.com. Please send 2 copies, one with and one without identifying information, for this double-blind review process.

Please submit your Word or PDF attachment with the subject of the email being “2018 SMA Conference Submission.” The lead author will be notified within two weeks after receiving the submission.
